In 2014, Adam Sandler described how completely a daughter’s distress unsettled him: “When your kid’s upset, you’re rocked until they’re not upset.” Even when the girls were fine, he worried about what might hurt them next.9
Raising Sadie and Sunny also changed how he understood his own parents. They had insisted he be kind to his sister because the family needed to stick together when the outside world was unkind. Now their protectiveness made sense to him as a father.9
An audience of one
When his older daughter was two and a half, Sandler asked what she wanted to hear, then built a bedtime story around her answers. She asked for waffles, and he began: “there was a giant waffle.” She wanted pancakes next, so he made the waffle fight a pancake. When she asked for syrup, he gave her more: “there was a river made of syrup.” Butter became a mountain. Then came cookies. This time she wanted an actual cookie, and the story ended.1
They also read The Little Engine That Could, a book Sandler remembered from his own childhood. He admitted that reading it over and over had lost some appeal. Hearing his daughter repeat the book’s words of encouragement still delighted him: “I like it when she says it.”1
Fatherhood also changed the audience he imagined for his films. In 2008, Sadie was two and Sunny had just been born. Sandler wanted to make something he could eventually watch with them. Bedtime Stories offered that possibility, along with the pleasure of children and grandparents laughing together at the movies.10
His daughter already knew that movies were his work. Sandler described watching her pack up as though leaving for a job. When he asked where she was going, she named his studio. When he asked what she would do there, she said she was making a movie.1
One Mother’s Day, after spending the day with the children, Sandler and his wife, Jackie, hoped to go out to a movie. First they needed the girls to fall asleep. As bedtime dragged on, he calculated that they had about twenty minutes left before they would miss their chance. Then Jackie fell asleep beside one child, while he was still awake with the other. They never made it to the movies.9
At the girls’ school, parents could join their children for lunch, and Sandler liked turning up with burgers. He joked that the delivery made him popular—and gave him something to remind a daughter of if she got angry with him that evening.9
His nerves, their lives
By 2023, the girls were teenagers, but Sandler still pictured them as little children. “I’m not ready for it,” he admitted. Sadie was driving on her own; he and Jackie worried about her safety on Los Angeles roads. But he made room for another fact in the same answer: their daughter was doing well.2
Sandler and Jackie talked at night about the girls’ futures. Their teenagers preferred friends, but even teasing kept a conversation going: he repeated phone mistakes because “it gives them a reason to talk to me.”7
His quick temper could upset others. Therapy taught him to pause before reacting: “holding in a sentence.”7
He also struggled not to dictate their tastes. When the girls enjoyed his choice of music in the car, he played another song, then another, admitting he should have stopped after the first. Jackie and his therapists urged him to let the girls discover things themselves.7
His daughters could be unsparing with him too. At the 2022 Gotham Awards, Sandler said they had written his acceptance speech and told him to use a Southern accent. He performed their portrait of a comically jealous father who could not bear the girls laughing at another comedian’s films. At his own tribute, he let Dad be the joke.5
Sunny could deliver her verdict directly. During a television interview from home in May 2020, she sat beside him while he explained that she had spotted a hair growing from his ear and told him he looked goofy. He shaved it; her next observation, as he recalled it, was “You’re bleeding.” Sunny then added her own description of the ear, told him she loved him and left. He suggested homework.12
The girls also turned his habits into a game. Sunny recalled that she and Sadie used to put on his oversized shirts and shorts, carry a soda and imitate his complaints about the air conditioning. Then they jumped into the pool wearing socks, as he did. She explained that he took his socks off in the water because bending down on land was difficult; afterward, they played catch with the wet socks.13
As the girls grew older, Sandler noticed that making them laugh took more work. They judged his jokes and sometimes asked him not to say certain things. He described their happiness as closely tied to his own.14
He tried adjusting his act for them too. In a November 2025 interview, Sandler recalled keeping a Las Vegas show clean because his daughters had brought friends for a birthday. The girls left about five minutes in. On earlier occasions, he said, hearing him curse onstage had made them wonder who that man was. He explained that the comedian was a character; their real dad was the person they knew at home.15
He wants them close
Working together became part of family life. In 2023, Sandler produced You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah, with Sunny in the central role, Sadie playing her sister and Adam their father. Jackie played another girl’s mother. All four had work to do on the same film.11
The girls’ interest in acting gave Sandler another way to spend time with them. They had grown up visiting sets and discussing movies. He and Jackie enjoyed talking shop with them. But he left the future open: “Who knows if it stays.” This was what the girls loved then, rather than a destiny he could announce for them.3
Asked about their ambitions, he praised the thought and work they were putting in. His stated wish was simpler than a successful family business: “I just want them to be happy.”2
Watching a daughter get a scene right brought Sandler relief. He compared it to being the parent in the stands when a child gets a hit in a baseball game. The satisfaction was personal as well as professional: he wanted the moment to go well for his child.8
He knows that his own work asks something of them, too. In 2025, Sandler explained why he tried to bring his family when a job took him away: “You don’t want to be apart.” Filmmaking mattered deeply to him and demanded time and concentration; “your family makes that sacrifice,” he said. Doing what he loved could cost him time with the people he loved.6
Music gave them another way to work together. At an October 2025 show in Milwaukee, Sunny sang while Sandler played guitar for her.16
He heard their music at home too. In February 2026, Sandler recalled walking past one daughter at the piano the previous night as she wrote a song. When he visited his other daughter in New York, her friends told him she played guitar all day. He recognized a love of making music that he remembered from his own younger years.17
His daughters wanted acting rather than stand-up. Sandler was “just pulling for them,” happy to let them choose their own path.18
Someone wants him around
In 2024, his daughters were pressing him to look after his health. Sandler recognized the persistence. He had wanted his own father to stop smoking because he wanted more time with him. Now he was the father receiving the reminders.4
He understood what was underneath them: “Man, I want this guy around.” It was his description of the feeling he had once had toward his dad. Hearing the concern from his daughters put him on the other side of it.4
For years, he had worried about keeping the girls safe and happy. Here was something they wanted from him: a dad who would take care of himself, too. Sandler could recognize the love in the reminder, even when it was aimed at him.
For your family
A moment before the next sentence
Worry can make a parent quick with a correction, a warning or an answer. A brief pause leaves a little room to hear what a child is actually saying. The first response that comes to mind can wait while the rest of her story arrives.
A small place to startWhen she starts telling you something, you could let her finish before deciding whether she needs advice, a question or simply your company.
