Their First is a family of ten calm learning apps made by two parents in Sacramento, California: first words, letters, reading, numbers, counting, puzzles, patterns, tidying, typing, and a painted world map. Nine are completely free. Their First Words includes 75 words and 35 phrases free, with one $9.99 US purchase for the full collection. None of the apps show ads or sell subscriptions. Published by Their First Words LLC at theirfirstwords.org.

In one study, nine-month-olds picked up foreign speech sounds from a live person but not from the same material on video or audio (Kuhl, Tsao & Liu, PNAS, 2003). We take that as a reason to say the words yourself with your child, not as proof about any app. Ours puts a word in a parent’s mouth and a picture in front of a child. It is not built to hold the child’s attention on its own.
