Lionel Richie remembered making Nicole a promise when she was little: “I’m never, ever going to leave you.” In 2016, talking with his grown daughter, he recalled why she had needed to hear it.1

He and his then-wife, Brenda, had initially offered Nicole a place to stay while her birth parents were going through difficulties. They became her guardians, then adopted her. In Lionel’s recollection, she had moved between relatives and worried about being left again. His work could take him away for weeks or months; he wanted her to understand that he would come back.1

Before Nicole, he told her, songwriting, business and touring had filled his life. Caring for her had softened him. He had set out to give a child some stability and found himself changed by the relationship, too.1

His children are daughters Nicole and Sofia, and son Miles. He has spoken about the joy of that job and the parts he wishes he had handled differently.2, 3

Learning what being there means

In 2009, Richie wished he had been around more during Nicole’s childhood. He had followed his own father’s example as a provider while his solo career took off. Nicole remembered him singing in the kitchen and playing with her. She disliked hearing him call himself a bad dad; he had traveled often, but their time together meant a great deal to her.3

When Nicole entered treatment for addiction, he and Brenda attended its family program. He described wanting desperately to rescue her, then learning that he could not make the decision for her. Being involved meant learning, too. Nicole remembered their support without judgment.3

Asked what he would tell another father, Richie came back to a simple habit: “ask for their feelings.” However busy life became, he wanted a child to know her parent cared about what was happening to her.4

The people who can tell him the truth

At work, Richie knew how easily success could surround him with flattery. At home, his children were available for a second opinion. “If I want the truth, I ask them,” he said in 2016.5

He described a designer enthusiastically promising how good an outfit would look. Then Nicole would walk in and deliver a much shorter review: “Dad? Take that off.” Richie told the story himself, cheerfully explaining that his children were the people he used to judge whether something worked. He could be famous in the room and still be the dad whose outfit needed changing.5

He also knew that his name could make an ordinary childhood moment harder. He recalled four-year-old Nicole freezing at a talent show after being introduced as his daughter. Years later, as Sofia considered her own career, he hoped she would learn how to recover from setbacks rather than expect uninterrupted success. “They’re all taking chances and I want them to do it now,” he said of his children in 2020.2

The dad in the front row

In September 2017, Richie arrived at a New York fashion show with Sofia’s mother and brother. She had been walking runways for more than a year, but her family had not yet seen her walk one. Now her dad was in the audience.6

Before the show, he recalled her telling him she was nervous. He had teased her that this was what happened when parents turned up. But he understood the feeling beneath it: she was still new to this work, and having her family there mattered. He knew what it was like to want someone to show up for you.6

After the joke and the explanation, he finished with two words: “Dad’s here.”6

Room for the family to grow

As his daughters grew up, there were decisions Richie chose to leave with them. Asked in 2009 whether Nicole and her partner should marry, he resisted imposing a timetable. He cared about their friendship and how they parented together. “Give them a moment to breathe,” he said.3

When he walked Sofia down the aisle in 2023, Richie was overwhelmed. She kept telling him she loved him as they walked. He recalled answering, “You’re killing me. You’re killing me.” He was happy for her, knew the man she was marrying and saw how happy they were together. Still, this was his daughter, and he had cried.7

He described the wedding as gaining a family even as he felt himself letting her go. His place in her life was changing again. Afterward, he was still talking about what she had said on the way down the aisle. She was beginning a new part of her life, and she still wanted her dad to know she loved him. Richie was there to hear it.7

For your family

Being there can change shape

Sofia could feel nervous about her dad arriving and still want him there. Richie came to watch her take her own turn, with someone familiar in the audience.

A small place to startBefore something new, a child might appreciate company, a little encouragement or someone waiting to hear how it went. There is room to ask.
