Three short games with circles, squares, and triangles. Point and talk on this page, draw the shapes on paper, or print and cut the cards below.
How to use this page
- Start with Copy. Say the line together: “circle, square, circle, square.” Invite your child to point, draw, or place the same shapes below.
- For Finish, look at what repeats and ask which shape comes next. For Fill, look on both sides of the empty place.
- If the printed cards feel fiddly, skip cutting and let your child point. An adult should cut and keep track of any small paper pieces.
Shapes have names and distinct outlines, so the activity still works without color printing. There is no score or time limit; stop when your child has had enough.
The three rounds
1 · Copy the line
Make a second line in the same order. Read left to right together.
2 · Finish the line
Two triangles, then a circle. It repeats. Which shape comes after the second pair of triangles?
3 · Fill the gap
Look before and after the empty place. Which shape belongs inside the line?
Answers for grown-ups
Copy: circle, square, circle, square. Finish: circle. Fill: circle. Ask “What part starts over?” rather than naming an answer immediately.
Reusable shape cards
Print and have an adult cut these along the dotted borders, or use household objects with two different shapes. The same cards work for all three rounds.
How this relates to the app
Their First Patterns uses playful performers in a wooden theater instead of paper shapes. A child can Copy, Finish, or Fill a visible sequence, then watch the completed line perform.
