Why families open these cards
For vovó e vovô.
For a lot of families the Portuguese cards are about the people on the other end of a video call to Brazil. The call comes, the child waves, and there is nothing to say into it. Over time the calls get shorter.
Three or four things a child can produce on cue change that call: Oi, vovó!, Eu te amo, the name of the dog. Nobody on that call is counting vocabulary. They are noticing that the child turned toward the voice and answered in its language.
It works in the other direction too. Show the grandparent the card, let them say passarinho into the phone in their own Portuguese, and let your child hear a voice they love saying it. The app is the prompt; the family is the point.
What’s on the cards
How the Portuguese sounds and reads.
- Brazilian, in the words and the voices. The bus is ônibus, the train is trem, ice cream is sorvete, breakfast is café da manhã, juice is suco. 39 phrases say você and none say tu. Both voices are native Brazilian Portuguese. A family in Lisbon will understand every card — and nothing stops you saying your own word out loud after the clip plays.
- The little words a Brazilian toddler actually hears. 36 cards end in -inho or -inha: passarinho, cachorrinho, gatinho, coelhinho, joaninha, pintinho. That is not baby talk added on top; it is the form the word takes when a grown-up says it to a small child, so it is the form on the card.
- Mamãe, papai, vovó, vovô. The people cards use the names a child says, not the dictionary’s: mamãe and papai, vovó and vovô.
- Spoken where it sounds spoken. Tô com raiva! is how a child blurts it, so that is how the card says it; where the fuller form is what people actually say, the card keeps it — Estou com fome, Estou com sede. Aí está você! and Onde foi parar? are the sentences that actually get said at playtime.
- The word follows the picture. The doctor on the card is a woman, so the card says médica. A boy who is brave is corajoso, a girl corajosa: the ending follows the child in the picture, so when you say it about your own child, change it to fit them.
- Two Portuguese voices, on every card. Every word and every phrase is spoken twice — in a woman’s native voice and in a man’s — and both live in the app at no extra cost. Whichever parent is doing bedtime, there is a voice on the card that sounds a little like them.

Is this Brazilian or European Portuguese?
Brazilian, in both the wording and the voices: ônibus, trem, sorvete, suco, and você throughout. There is no separate European Portuguese library. A family in Portugal will understand every card, and where your family says it differently, your word is the right one to say out loud after the clip.
